Standard 5: Refrigerator — Hygiene, Odor Control & Seal Care

Standard 5 is for an odor-free refrigerator. We do not “mask” odors—we remove the source and keep the space clean, dry and residue-free.

Quick diagnosis

• Check for expired items, spills and unsealed containers.
• A musty smell often comes from moisture in drawers, door seals, or a condensate tray (if present).

KUGO protocol

1. Power down: if practical, move food to a cooler bag and unplug the unit for safe work.
2. Sort: remove questionable items and open containers.
3. Shelves/drawers: wash separately with a neutral solution, rinse, and dry fully.
4. Interior walls: microfiber with a neutral cleaner, then a clean damp wipe and full drying.
5. Door seals: clean folds carefully and dry thoroughly.
6. Odor absorber: place baking soda in an open container or activated charcoal in a breathable pouch (not touching food).

What we avoid

• No heavy fragrances inside (temporary cover only).
• No leaving moisture on shelves and seals.
• No mixing harsh chemicals; no bleach in a closed volume.
